Ambazonia Attack Leaves Two Footballers Dead

Two promising footballers have died following an attack from suspected Ambazonia fighters, Kick442.com has reported.

The players as TWIF NEWS has learned, met their waterloo in Widikum recently when they were returning to Bamenda from Mamfe where they recently took part in a football inter-quarter competition.

According to Kick442.com, the vehicle transporting four players and a pastor was intercepted in Widikum by alledged Pro-independence fighters who molested the players before taking three of them to a nearby river for further interrogations.

The players included former National Polytechnic captain, Monthe Louis, Ngoufang, Collins, and Fonou Cyril.

Fonou reportedly sneaked back into the car and drove to Bamenda with the pastor and the driver of the said car, who had been allowed to go by the supposed secessionists.

In a bid to seek refuge, Monthe, Ngoufang and Collins jumped into the river. Ngoufang who could not swim, went out of the water, presumably from the shallow part, and hid himself in a nearby bush while the duo continued swimming towards Batibo where their corpes were discovered at the river banks on Wednesday August 21, 2019.

It is unclear how exactly they died, but sources suggest they might have drowned in the course of fleeing from their abductors.

It is not the first time football perso-nalities are falling prey to combatants since an armed conflict broke out in Anglophone Cameroon three years ago.

Coaches of Bamenda based top flight teams Emmanuel Ndoumbe Bosso and Augustin Tchoupo of YOSA and PWD respectively, were allegedly kidnapped by Ambazonia fighters and released after several hours.

When Cameroon emerged as cham- pions of the 2017 AFCON in Gabon, government officials paraded the trophy in Buea and Bamenda, hoping to seek lasting peace and national unity in the crisis battered North West and South West regions.

Two years gone, the said peace and unity are seemingly far-fetched as football actors are increasingly being targeted in the two restive Anglophone minority regions of the country.
