COVID-19 In Buea: Persons with Visual Impairment Receive Aid

By Kesah Princely & Regis Che In Buea

As the world continues the fight against the Coronavirus, organisations and associations of persons with disabilities (PWDs) in Cameroon are not left behind.

One of such bodies is the Centre for the Rehabilitation of Youth with Visual Impairment in Cameroon, known by its French acronym as CJARC. The organisation carried out a massive donation of anti-COVID-19 kits to over 30 persons with visual impairment in Buea, South West of the country.

The symbolic ceremony which took place at the premises of the Coordinating Unit of Associations of Persons with Disabilities, (CUAPWDs) on Tuesday August 25, was a moment for leaders of the two organisations to cement their relationship.

Beneficiaries recieved items ranging from mobility canes, face masks, hand sanitizers as well as food stuff, such as rice, groundnut oil and canned sardine.

Speaking to TWIF NEWS after the event, CJARC’s CEO and Director General, Coco Bertain, himself a person with visual impairment (PVI), said, it is one of his organisation’s objectives to cater for persons with disabilities in times of crises, like the global COVID-19 pandemic.

The leader revealed that the Buea gesture was necessary, given that his institution was unable to host many persons with visual impairment in Yaounde, on the International Day of the White Cane, observed every October 15.

“It is a tradition that we receive Persons with Visual Impairment in Yaounde every year. But due to the COVID-19, we decided to move to the regions as a means to avoid contracting the Coronavirus,” he said.

“That is why we are moving from Buea to Douala, and then to Baffoussam for the same exercise,” he added.

While appreciating the unity amongst persons with visual impairment in Buea, he urged them to also unite in the fight against the deadly Coronavirus pandemic.

At the close of the event, CUAPWD’s president, Agbor Valarie Orock expressed gratitude and entreated the beneficiaries to use the items judiciously.
